Living Room
- For large living rooms with furniture in the center, a large rug is best. Such a rug will help to place the furniture on top without overwhelming it.
- Standard sizes are 9'x12' and 11'x14'
- If the furniture is against the wall, the rug should be placed so that the two front legs of the furniture remain on the rug.
- Standard sizes: - 6'x9' and 8'x10'
- If the room has a coffee table, small rugs are best suited for this space.
- Standard sizes: - 4'x6' and 5'x7'
- If you have a wood floor, it is best to choose a rug that allows about eight inches (twenty centimeters) of wood to be exposed around the edges of the rug.
- Some larger living rooms can accommodate more than two rugs.
Bedroom
- Instead of one rug in a room-sized bedroom, use multiple rugs. Large bedroom rugs will be hidden under the bed.
- Put a rug at the foot of the bed and two on each side to create a cozier base.
- You can also put in several smaller rugs to fill the space as needed.
- Standard sizes are 2'6'x8' and 3'x5'.
- However, if you choose an under-bed rug, it should extend around the bed for 3 feet or so. It can also be placed on the sides rather than at the foot of the bed.
- Standard sizes: - 8'x10' (queen) and 9'x12' (king).
Dining
- The rug should be large enough to fit all the chairs on it. The back legs of the chairs should remain on the carpet when the chairs are pulled out.
- It is recommended that the carpet extend 2 feet beyond each side of the table.
- Standard sizes are 8'x10' and 9'x12'
Aisles & Entrances
- A wool runner can be placed in the center of the hallway. Wool runners are durable in this high-traffic area.
- Very light colors are usually not appropriate for this room.
- Standard sizes are:- 2'6'x8' and 3'x12'.
- The runner can also be left on one side of the hallway or passageway, and furniture can be placed against the opposite wall.
- Standard sizes: - 2'6'x8' and 3'x12'
Kitchen
- Lay a small mat in front of the sink if there will be a lot of foot traffic.
- Standard size: 2'x3'
- Rugs are the best choice for narrow kitchens. They fill the space and remain soft underfoot.
- Standard sizes: 2'6'x8' and 3'x5'
